Totem

The totem is part of the physical and spiritual structure of the Lakota flute, which plays a fundamental role in how the flute sounds and is also used to adjust the sound output of the instrument.
The totem consists of two parts: the base and the statue. The statue, according to the Nativa Americans, is the connection point between the player’s spirit and the Lakota flute. The totem can be placed on the Lakota flute in two ways: movable (replaceable) or fixed (non-replaceable). Of course, the totems installed on our instruments are movable and replaceable.

All our flutes come with a totem, the design of which is designed according to our taste, but you can also have one or more other totems that you can place on the instrument according to your taste and in different situations. For this reason, we have provided the possibility of ordering a totem from existing samples or ordering a totem with your requested design.

The importance of totems from a structural perspective

The totem is a part of the soundboard area of the Lakota instrument that plays an important role in the sound production and its manner in the Lakota instrument, so that professional and prominent makers of this instrument give the instrument a unique and special sound color by designing their own unique totem structure. These different design patterns are most visible in the top and front walls of the totem. Totems can also be simple or have side walls or even a top (cave-like), with models with walls being more effective in environments that experience high winds.

The importance of totems from a spiritual perspective

According to the Native Americans, the totem is the connection point between the player’s spirit and the Lakota flute. For this reason, the Indians take into account internal and precise considerations in choosing and making a totem. From their perspective, the totem is a being or an element whose spirit has a deep connection with you. For example, perhaps you have a close connection with an eagle or a horse, you see them in your dreams, and their meeting always has internal signs for you. In this case, this animal could be your totem. This same connection could be with a tree or a natural element such as fire. The nice thing is that you can order this special totem separately from us to be made and sent to you along with your instrument. Of course, the price of custom totem sculptures varies depending on the design and details you request. You can contact us through the communication portals for more information about this.
